Norma’s Norwich sit-in for Christian charities
Norma Broadest, who attends STN church in Norwich, will be undertaking a sponsored sit-in on Saturday September 9, as part of fundraising activities she has been part of for over 35 years.
Norma will be raising money for two charities her church is closely linked with; Street Child and Hope in Burundi.
For many years Norma has been involved in the Historic Churches Trust cycle/walk, which marks its 40th anniversary this year. https://norfolkchurchestrust.org.uk/bike-ride-walk/
This year, she will complete her ‘sit-in’ whilst signing off the cyclists and walkers who call in en-route.
Norma used to take part in the fundraising route on foot with friends, but a few years ago realised there was no-one available at her church – St Thomas on Earlham Road – to keep the church open, offer simple refreshments and sign off the walkers and cyclists as they arrived, so she started the first of many ‘sit-ins’ so she could keep up with her fundraising.
Last year Norma did complete the walk, but found it very tiring – she is fast approaching 79 and is supposed to be taking things easily, hence another sit-in this year. Norma will be stationed at the Mitre from 9am – 5pm during her sponsored sit-in (she does allow herself a loo break!)
Next year Norma is hoping to take part on the walk/cycle route again and is planning to have some form of transport. She says it won’t be a bike as she can’t cycle – so watch this space! Her approach shows that there are no barriers to taking part in activities if you come up with creative ways to make it work.
