Norwich Soca Seniors football club unveil new over-75s team
Norwich Soca Seniors (NSS), a local walking football team, has created an over-75s side in response to increasing demand for places. The team, which currently has over 100 members aged between 50 and 80, officially unveiled the new team at Bowthorpe Park. NSS has achieved success in national and international tournaments, with the club’s over-65s team being European Champions for the past two years. Richard Graham, the Seniors’ coach and physiotherapist, explained that the new team was set up to cater to the growing number of members aged over 75.
Gary Cockaday, a senior member of the club, reflected on the changing attitudes towards exercise among older adults. He highlighted that playing football was now a popular form of activity for seniors, whereas in the past, a walk on the beach might have been considered sufficient exercise. NSS competes in a variety of age categories, including over 50s, over 60s, over 65s, over 70s, and soon over 75s. The club has won the WFA National Cup in the over 70s category twice.
Walking football has seen a surge in popularity in recent years, and more clubs across the country are creating teams for older adults. Richard Graham emphasized the benefits of the sport, describing it as a wonderful way to keep fit, make friends, and relive the enjoyable moments of playing football alongside friends. He also highlighted the positive impact the sport has on the local community, providing an opportunity for socializing and getting out of the house.
The sense of camaraderie among the players was evident as Graham spoke about the team’s dynamic. He emphasized the strong bond among the members, referring to them as one big family. This feeling of togetherness contributes to the enjoyable and social aspect of the sport. Overall, NSS and their newly-formed over-75s team exemplify how walking football can benefit older adults, not just physically but also mentally and socially.
