Norwich City loan striker Hwang dropped by South Korea
Norwich City forward Hwang Ui-Jo is currently under investigation by South Korean police for allegedly secretly filming a woman and sharing the footage. Despite denying the allegations, he was questioned by cybercrime officers in Seoul earlier in the month. The Korea Football Association (KFA) has issued a statement saying that Hwang will not play for the national team again until the investigation is over. This has placed pressure on Norwich City, but he is still expected to be named in the squad for the upcoming Championship game.
Hwang scored the only goal for Norwich City in a recent victory over Queens Park Rangers and started the game, despite the ongoing investigation. Manager David Wagner stated that the issue was being handled by the new sporting director and that Hwang would continue to be involved in matches. Hwang denies all the allegations and has brought a counter-claim for defamation and blackmail against his accuser, insisting that the footage was taken with the woman’s consent. Despite the allegations, his national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann has backed him up, stating that he does not believe the speculations until they are proven true.
However, the KFA has now changed its position and stated that Hwang will not play for the national team until the investigation is concluded. The head of the ethics committee emphasized that national athletes must behave with high moral standards and a sense of responsibility, managing their private life according to these standards. Despite this, Hwang is still expected to be named in the squad for the upcoming match against Watford. His ongoing involvement with Norwich City has drawn attention to the situation and has put pressure on the team.
