Norwich City transfer deadline day news: Ui-Jo Hwang signs

The 31-year-old joins the Canaries as they look to bolster their attacking options, with American international Josh Sargent out with a long-term ankle ligament injury.

Sargent’s injury, sustained in last weekend’s 4-0 win over Huddersfield, forced sporting director Stuart Webber back into the market after all their planned business was complete with the free transfer of experienced midfielder Adam Forshaw.

Hwang has remained the Norfolk side’s top target throughout the search for a striker, with the club’s limited spending power meaning a loan was preferable.

Other options considered included new Leicester City signing Tom Cannon, as well as Bournemouth duo Kieffer Moore and Jamal Lowe. Forest’s loan signing of AC Milan striker Divock Origi meant Hwang became available, however.

The South Korean international came through the ranks at Seongnam, scoring 43 goals in 163 appearances before joining Japanese side Gamba Osaka.

He scored 31 goals for the J1 League side, including 21 in the 2018 season. He then moved to Europe, scoring 29 times in 98 appearances for Bordeaux, before signing for the Midlands club in a £3.5million transfer.

He’s yet to make a single appearance for Forest, however, spending time on loan at Olympiacos and Seoul since moving to the City Ground. He’s played 56 times for his country, scoring 17 goals.

Hwang will not be available for City’s Championship match against Rotherham United this afternoon, having missed yesterday’s midday registration cut-off.
