As the players emerged from the tunnel and the iconic Champions League anthem was played through the PA system at the San Siro, Murphy couldn’t hide his delight as he soaked in the occasion prior to kick off.
Murphy played 63 minutes of the Group F clash before being replaced by Callum Wilson as Newcastle’s first game in nearly 20 years ended as a stalemate.
Newcastle share a group with Paris Saint Germain, Borussia Dortmund and the Italian side as they feature in the Champions League for the first time since 2003.
City sold Murphy to Newcastle back in 2017 for a fee of £12.5million. The winger has become a reliable part of Eddie Howe’s squad and, although not a frequent starter, plays regularly for the Magpies.
He has since made 150 appearances for Newcastle and plenty inside Norwich feel tremendous pride towards his progression since leaving Norfolk.

Murphy was an FA Youth Cup winner during his time at Carrow Road, having joined the club from the age of seven.
The winger made 42 appearances for City’s first-team, the majority of which came in the 2016/17 campaign when he netted all of his nine goals for the club. He impressed sufficiently to lead to a big-money move to his boyhood club Newcastle.
Since his move to the north east, Murphy has been forced to encounter plenty of adversity but is now a valued part of Howe’s side. He described the prospect of playing Champions League football as a ‘dream come true’ back in May.
For a player who has done the hard yards throughout his career, it was a moment of real pride for the winger, his family and those key players in his development.
