Norwich City defender Jonathan Tomkinson in Olympics frame

The US soccer team has qualified for the football tournament at the Games for the first time since 2008. The team consists of players aged 23 or under, with the addition of three over-age players. Among the players selected is 21-year-old loanee from League Two Bradford, Tom Tomkinson. He has been included in a 23-man squad for upcoming games against Mexico and Japan. Tomkinson made his Championship debut for Norwich last season and was part of the team’s pre-season preparations. However, he suffered an ankle injury during a summer tune-up match in Germany. Despite his injury, Tomkinson has been called up to join the US squad at their camp in Arizona.

Tom Tomkinson was signed by Bradford on a season-long loan from his parent club. However, both the manager and assistant manager were recently dismissed due to a poor start to the season. Tomkinson has only made one appearance for Bradford so far. Although he will miss the team’s upcoming matches, he sees this as an opportunity to join the US squad and showcase his skills on an international level. Tomkinson is the only UK-based player called up to the US squad, which includes 12 players from the MLS.

The US team’s qualification for the Paris Olympics came through their performance at the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championships in Honduras. Their success in that tournament earned them a spot in the upcoming Olympics. The team is now preparing for their matches against Mexico and Japan. This will be an important opportunity for the young players in the squad to gain valuable experience and prove themselves on the international stage. With the addition of three over-age players, the squad will have a mix of youth and experience as they aim to make a strong impression at the Games.

The US Soccer Youth National Team (USYNT) Twitter account announced the start of the team’s training camp in Phoenix in preparation for the upcoming matches. The first game will be against Mexico on October 11th, followed by a match against Japan on October 17th. This marks the beginning of the team’s journey towards the Paris Olympics. The US squad will have the chance to train together and build chemistry before facing tough opponents. As the team prepares for these important matches, they will have the opportunity to showcase their skills and compete against top-level international teams. The US soccer fans are eagerly anticipating the team’s performance and are hopeful for a successful campaign at the Games.
