Ex-Norwich City midfielder joins Wayne Rooney at Birmingham

Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the new manager of Birmingham City, replacing John Eustace in a move that has caused controversy among supporters and the wider football world. Rooney, who was part of Eustace’s backroom team at DC United, has reunited with him as he takes charge of Birmingham. Former players Ashley Cole and John O’Shea have been appointed as Rooney’s assistants, with Carl Robinson and Pete Shuttleworth also supporting the 37-year-old at St Andrews. Rooney’s appointment comes despite Eustace guiding Birmingham into the top six with back-to-back victories.

Rooney’s managerial career began when he moved into coaching after retiring from playing in 2011. He has previous experience as a manager with Vancouver Whitecaps, Newcastle Jets, and Western Sydney Wanderers. He joined Eustace’s backroom team at DC United in March and the pair will continue their working relationship at Birmingham. Prior to joining DC United, Rooney praised Robinson’s experience and knowledge of MLS and highlighted his value to the coaching side.

Birmingham’s hierarchy cited a ‘lack of alignment’ with Eustace as the reason for relieving him of his duties. The club’s new ownership group, led by Tom Wagner, selected Rooney to lead their new project forward. The Blues hope that Rooney will bring a winning culture and a ‘no fear’ football philosophy to the club. He will be backed in the January transfer window as he looks to make his mark at Birmingham.

Rooney’s first game in charge will be away at Middlesbrough after the international break, and there will undoubtedly be plenty of attention on his arrival in the Second City. The season culminates with a final day fixture against Norwich at St Andrews on May 4. Rooney’s appointment as manager has been met with mixed reactions, but only time will tell if he can guide Birmingham to success in the Championship.
