Connor Southwell: Norwich City have lost all sense of self

Norwich City finds itself in a state of uncertainty and instability. With a run of defeats, leaking goals, and a slide down the Championship table, the club’s problems extend beyond the current head coach and on-pitch issues. There is a lack of clarity and direction within the club, reflected in their recruitment strategies and inconsistent playing styles.

Under the management of Daniel Farke, Norwich had a clear plan and identity that bound everyone together. However, since Farke’s dismissal, the club has lost its way in pursuit of success without a clear recipe to get there. The squad is unbalanced, built for different head coaches and styles, and the conveyor belt of youth talent has dried up. Norwich resembles a confused teenager who has lost all sense of self after a break-up.

Norwich’s model of conforming to teams with deeper pockets and resources has cost them on the pitch and in the development of young players. The playing style is being dictated by short-lived head coaches, causing disruptions and stalling the growth of promising talents. Supporters are attending matches with little excitement and idea of the club’s bigger picture.

The imminent departure of sporting director Stuart Webber adds to the uncertainty off the pitch. The shareholding situation and a chronically underperforming football team contribute to the perception of a lack of leadership. Norwich, once a beacon of stability and good practice, now faces a critical period that requires finding answers to long-term problems and restoring stability on the pitch.

In this challenging situation, head coach David Wagner must prove he can bring stability and turn the club’s fortunes around. However, there is a need for a clear vision and strategy from new sporting director Ben Knapper, and a resolution to the off-pitch uncertainties. Norwich must rediscover their identity and clarity of purpose to move forward effectively.
