Norwich Cathedral awarded Sanctuary status
Norwich Cathedral has been recognized as a Cathedral of Sanctuary for its commitment to welcoming those starting new lives in Norwich. The Cathedral is part of the City of Sanctuary vision, providing a place of safety for all. The Cathedral hosted various events, including the launch of Refugee Week Norwich’s Our City: Our Home event and the City Service, which brought communities together to celebrate the city. An exhibition sharing stories of people seeking new beginnings in Norwich is also being presented in collaboration with English+, a charity providing support to refugees, asylum seekers, and others starting new lives in Norwich.
The Dean of Norwich, along with other members of the community, expressed their delight in the Cathedral being granted Cathedral of Sanctuary status. The Cathedral was particularly recognized for its partnership with English+, which offers English lessons and support to those starting new lives in Norwich. The exhibition, City of Strangers…City of Stories, showcases stories of individuals who have taken part in English+ classes. The Cathedral has been supportive of Refugee Week Norwich and has helped produce exhibitions sharing stories of newcomers to Norwich, promoting inclusion and community.
The panel that granted the Cathedral of Sanctuary status also acknowledged the Cathedral’s work with Hope into Action project, St Martins homelessness charity, and its interfaith program for school visits. The Cathedral’s overarching ethos of welcome is at the heart of everything it does. The free exhibition, City of Strangers…City of Stories, will be on display in the Cathedral’s South Transept until June 30. Refugee Week Norwich’s celebration, Our City: Our Home, includes various events, such as a Bishop’s House Open Garden afternoon in support of the Norwich Integration Partnership.
A family who sought sanctuary in Norwich shared their story of leaving El Salvador due to violence and seeking a fresh start in England. They were welcomed by good people who made them feel at home, and treasured the time they spent living with amazing people. The father expressed his hope for his children to succeed in their new country and the family’s gratitude for finding safety and unity in their new home. The Cathedral’s recognition as a Cathedral of Sanctuary reflects the efforts of various organizations and individuals in Norwich who are dedicated to welcoming and supporting those seeking refuge and a new beginning in the city.
