How have ex-Norwich managers fared on Carrow Road return?
Norwich City has seen several former managers return to Carrow Road as opposition managers over the years. Ron Saunders, who led the Canaries to their first-ever promotion to the First Division, returned with Manchester City in 1973, but the game ended in a draw. John Bond, who kept Norwich in the top-flight under financial constraints, returned as Manchester City boss in 1981 and suffered a 2-0 defeat. Mike Walker, who left Norwich for Everton in 1994 after a period of success, saw his Everton team lose 3-0 to Norwich upon his return. Martin O’Neill, who resigned as Norwich manager in 1995, faced his former club three times as manager of Sunderland, but lost on his first return in 2012. Gary Megson, who had a brief stint as Norwich City manager, returned as Stockport County manager in 1997 and drew 1-1. Paul Lambert is the only manager to have marked his first return with a win, as his Aston Villa team triumphed 4-1 in a League Cup match in 2012. Chris Hughton, who was sacked by Norwich in 2014, has never won as an opposition manager in his two returns with Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest. Alex Neil, who was sacked by Norwich in 2017, has yet to record a victory against Norwich at Carrow Road in his five attempts as an opposition manager. Daniel Farke, who enjoyed success with Norwich and guided them to two Championship titles, will attempt to become the second ex-City boss to win on his first reunion with the Canaries as he brings his Leeds United side to Carrow Road.
