The King’s Lynn Night Shelter will open again in early October to provide emergency accommodation to some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
The night shelter is now recruiting for volunteers to help with this vital work. Information and training evenings for new volunteers will be held at 7pm at St John’s Church in the Walks, next door to the Night Shelter, on Thursdays, 15 September 15 and 22, and on Tuesday October 11.
Refreshments will be served and there will be a chance to chat with some of last year’s volunteer team and ask questions as well as covering the essentials of the role.
Volunteers offer as much or as little time as they are able, typically a morning, evening or night once a week or once a fortnight. Their roles include making a hot evening meal for homeless guests, chatting with them, making breakfast, making beds: the Night Shelter staff work with our volunteers at all times to take responsibility for everyone’s safety and wellbeing.
Lucy McKitterick, Night Shelter Co-ordinator, said: “Many of our volunteers return year on year and tell us that their time at the Night Shelter is immensely rewarding. It is our volunteers who make the Night Shelter a “family home” for our guests, and the gift of their time and kindness makes a huge difference to our work. There are no special skills required but we do especially need night owls … so if you’re up for making a cup of tea and being a listening ear at midnight for someone in need, we’d definitely love to meet you!”
The Night Shelter opens this season from October 6 2022 until June 30 2023, and plans to open year-round as soon as funding makes this possible. The house and garden at St John’s House will be open to visitors on Sunday September 11, 10am-4pm as part of King’s Lynn Heritage Open Day, with refreshments all day and tours, and warmly welcomes friends old and new to come and explore.
