King’s Lynn Foodbank finds new home with Sea Cadets

Following an uncertain year searching for a new distribution centre, the King’s Lynn Foodbank has found a permanent home within the King’s Lynn Sea Cadets building.

From Monday, June 11 King’s Lynn Foodbank will be operating from the King’s Lynn Sea Cadets building on St Margaret’s Lane in the South Quay.

The Foodbank has been distributing emergency food supplies from its temporary premises at the Purfleet Trust since March, following the sale of their previous base at The Red Cross building.

The move to the Sea Cadets building marks the end of a challenging time for the Foodbank. Andy King, Foodbank Trustee said: “It’s taken us months to find a suitable building so we’re delighted to be working with the Sea Cadets.

“The building is in a great location, there’s plenty of space to sit down with people over a tea or coffee and there’s space available if we need to talk with someone in private.”

The service fed 4,406 people in 2017/18 including 1,554 children, an increase of 16% from the previous year.  With the roll-out of Universal Credit expected in November, King’s Lynn Foodbank is bracing itself for a further upturn in demand.

“It’s a modern tragedy that we even exist,” said Andy. “In a country as rich as ours, nobody should be in a position where they have to rely on a Foodbank. Nevertheless, we exist to treat people with compassion and to provide hope and dignity to people in crisis.”

King’s Lynn Foodbank will continue to open from 12.30-2.30pm Monday to Friday.
