Norwich City: Nunez credited with Chile World Cup goal

Chile’s Marcelino Nunez has been awarded a goal in the World Cup qualifier against Peru, making it the fastest goal by a Chilean substitute in the history of South American World Cup qualifiers. Initially, the goal was listed as an own goal by Peru’s Marcos Lopez, but after four days, FIFA awarded the goal to Nunez. Chilean media claimed to have seen the referee’s official report, which stated that Nunez had diverted Alexander Aravena’s cross into the net. Nunez had only been on the pitch for 114 seconds before scoring the goal.

Following the World Cup qualifier, Nunez will return to England to join Norwich City for their Championship match against Leeds United. Norwich City manager, David Wagner, allowed Nunez to play for Chile after missing six games for Norwich due to a left ankle injury sustained during the previous international window. Wagner believed that playing in a competitive game for Chile would be psychologically important for Nunez and help him regain confidence.

Despite being an important player for Chile, Nunez is yet to make a Championship start for Norwich City this season. However, his goal-scoring performance for Chile could potentially earn him more playing time with the Norwich squad. Nunez’s speedy goal and his contribution to Chile’s victory against Peru have showcased his potential and could serve as a turning point in his career at Norwich City.

Chile’s next World Cup qualifier is against Venezuela, and it remains to be seen if Nunez will feature in that match as well. The recognition of his goal against Peru and his overall performance in the international break could have a significant impact on his future prospects both for Chile and Norwich City. The fast goal and the subsequent media attention highlight Nunez’s talent and potential as a player, and it will be interesting to see how this recognition and confidence boost translates into his performances at the club level.
