David Hannant: Norwich City are in a state of limbo
Norwich City started the season with a sense of optimism after several difficult seasons. They were playing well and keeping up with the top scorers in the league. However, their early success has been exposed as a false dawn. This has been a trend in their manager, David Wagner’s, previous appointments, where the team starts well but quickly declines. The recent defeat against Middlesbrough highlighted the team’s poor performance, with sloppy passing, lack of direction in attacks, and countless occasions of casually giving away the ball. The manager’s decision-making, particularly in substitutions, has also been questionable and has taken the sting out of potential comebacks.
The club finds itself in a state of limbo, as they are in between two sporting directors and still have a month until the new manager arrives. There are limited choices for the club – to persist with a manager who has lost his way or relieve him of his duties but face the challenge of finding a new manager without the full input of the outgoing sporting director. This situation is highly impractical and indicates a lack of planning on the part of the board. Had they known about the sporting director’s departure earlier, they should have found his replacement before the start of the season.
The club’s current situation is even more frustrating as they watch their promotion-chasing rivals pull further ahead. Norwich City needs to make a decision about their manager and find a way to salvage their season. One option could be to drop Wagner temporarily until the new sporting director arrives, but this is still far from ideal. The club needs to address their managerial issues as soon as possible to prevent the campaign from spiraling further downward.
