Folk band play for Stalham Baptist fundraiser
Folk band Two’s Company will be giving a free concert at Stalham Baptist Church later this month to raise funds towards the refurbishment of the church’s premises. Tony Rothe reports.
Two’s Company are husband and wife Ted and Penny Doe who perform Celtic and traditional folk songs, arranged for voice, cello, guitar, mandolin, various folk whistles, and a variety of other folk instruments. This traditional music covers a period of over 800 years. The duo perform across Norfolk and Suffolk, playing and singing, but also talking about and demonstrating their various instruments, many of which are unfamiliar to audiences.
The concert will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday July 30. Although free, donations will be invited from those attending, and the proceeds will go towards the refurbishing of the “School Room” and its associated facilities, that together form the church’s community letting space.
For many years Ted was a professional cellist. He played with many of the London orchestras, and was principal cellist at the London Palladium for several years. Since moving to Norfolk, he taught cello at many schools across the county before his retirement.
Penny is the singer, a classically-trained contralto. She also plays a number of different instruments – guitar, an assortment of mandolins, mandola, ukulele, banjo-uke, as well as various folk whistles – penny whistle, low whistle and several others in between.
Diana Gordon, a deacon at Stalham Baptist Church, says, “We were delighted to be approached by Penny & Ted offering to help with the fund-raising for the refurbishment by providing their time and talents free and I am sure this will be an extremely enjoyable evening.”
Doors will open at 7:00pm and admission free although donations will be welcome. Interval refreshments will be available.
Stalham Baptist Church is in the centre of the town at NR12 9AZ.
