Sprowston WW2 veteran receives Dutch Medal of Liberation

Ray Parke, 98, who took part in the Battle of the Scheldt in 1944 during World War II, has been awarded the Dutch Medal of Liberation. The medal was awarded to Ray by Wing Commander Martine Verhulst from the Dutch Embassy. It was presented at a ceremony at the Warren care home in Sprowston where Ray currently lives. He was accompanied by his children, grandchildren, and invited guests for the event. Wing Commander Verhulst told tales of Ray’s past and presented him with pictures of the land he helped to free, which brought tears to everyone present.

Wing Commander Verhulst spoke of the importance of honoring Ray’s story and the work that he and his team did during the war. She emphasized the significance of keeping his story alive and stated that it was an honor to present him with the award. The Dutch Medal of Liberation was instituted in December 1980 to mark the 35th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from Nazi occupation. This presentation was a poignant moment for Ray, as it was his last major event of the year.
Previously, he had visited the Duxford Imperial War Museum, met the King at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire, and played a significant role in the Remembrance Day service in Thorpe St Andrew.

An emotional Ray said, “The only thing I have left to add that hasn’t been said, is when I see those pictures and hear those stories, I think: I was there and I helped them when they needed help so badly.” The Dutch Medal of Liberation joins other medals that Ray has earned throughout his years of service. Ray’s work and sacrifices during the war have been recognized and celebrated, allowing his story to continue to inspire future generations. His bravery and dedication to helping others in their time of need have left a lasting impact.
