NR3’s cycling Santa is returning to the streets of Norwich
Gary Hoyles is returning for 2023 with a new and improved sound system, making his presence on the streets even more noticeable than before. He has installed eight battery packs on his bike to power the lights in the front, as well as additional lights with built-in battery packs, ensuring that he cannot be missed. Each evening, on dry nights, Gary spends four hours cycling through the streets, spreading joy with his festive music and colorful lights. This year, Gary has found that his unique Santa visits have become quite popular, bringing smiles to both children and adults as he cycles past with his blaring Christmas music.
However, Gary is vigilant about the weather conditions, as his magical bicycle is not safe to ride in heavy rain or icy conditions. On nights without rain, he plans to venture out, spreading holiday cheer for all to hear. Last year, Gary’s favorite moment was visiting the Woodside Care Home, where all the residents gathered at the windows to dance and wave to his festive tunes. He also posts a tracker on his Facebook page for those who wish to pre-plan and catch a glimpse of him as he cycles through NR3.
Gary’s main motivation for his annual Christmas bike rides is the joy he brings to both children and adults. His favorite part of the experience is seeing the looks on people’s faces as he cycles past, playing Christmas music at a high volume. Throughout the evening, he stops to greet children who run out of their houses and waves at those who come to the windows to see him. The joy and happiness he spreads during his rides make all the effort and preparation worthwhile, and the positive reactions from the community serve as his main motivation for continuing this tradition. With a new and louder speaker this year, Gary is determined to make sure that everyone can hear the Christmas music as he cycles through the streets.
