Norwich woman preparing for Talisker Atlantic Challenge

Abbey Platten, a 26-year-old from Norwich, will be part of a four-woman team embarking on an unassisted row across the Atlantic Ocean in December. Their goal is to reach Antigua in the Caribbean, battling potentially 40ft waves along the way. Abbey, who is a personal trainer and the current British record holder for the female 20-29 category with the most number of meters rowed in 24 hours, decided to participate in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge after one of the initial team members had to drop out.

Despite feeling a mixture of stress and excitement, Abbey is determined to prove that anything is possible if one desires it enough. The team, named There She Rows, plans to start their challenge from La Gomera and complete the journey in under 40 days. They will be rowing two hours on and two hours off, 24 hours a day. The team chose this name to highlight the fact that 1.6 million more men play sports once a week in the UK than women.

The funds raised through this challenge will be split between four charities, with Abbey’s share going to Norwich-based Eating Matters. This cause is close to her heart as she battled anorexia between the ages of 16 and 19. Abbey hopes to inspire people struggling with their mental health to seek help and find happiness. The team aims to raise £100,000, and they have already raised over £2,500 on their Gofundme page.

In conclusion, Abbey Platten and her team, There She Rows, are set to embark on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, a grueling unassisted row across the Atlantic Ocean. Their goal is to inspire others and raise funds for charities, including Eating Matters, which focuses on mental health. With Abbey’s determination and impressive rowing record, the team is ready to face the challenges of the open sea and prove that anything is possible.
