Julian of Norwich’s important influence to be taught to kids
A half-term event is being organized to ensure that the achievements of Julian of Norwich are remembered and celebrated. Julian, who wrote the book Revelations of Divine Love, came from a humble background but her book has survived for over 650 years. Despite her significance in the city, many people are not aware of her contributions and the reasons why she is so important. The event aims to allow people to learn more about her and her work.
Revelations of Divine Love is a book that details Julian’s visions of the Passion of Christ. Julian fell severely ill in 1373 at the age of 30. However, she made a miraculous recovery and took vows to live as an anchoress. She locked herself away in a small cell attached to St Julian’s Church, where others would come to seek her wisdom through the tiny window of her cell. She was known as a “free psychotherapist” due to her role in offering guidance and comfort to those who sought her help.
The writings of Julian of Norwich are now housed in the British Library and have been digitized, making them accessible to everyone online. Her works are highly regarded, to the extent that the famous line “all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well” was embroidered at the bottom of a screen used during the King’s coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey in May. This demonstrates the lasting impact and influence of Julian’s teachings.
As part of an international art exhibition in response to Julian’s ‘shewings’ 650 years ago, an arts and crafts day is being held to teach youngsters about Julian of Norwich. This event, organized by Lucy Care, will take place on Thursday, October 26 and will run from 10am to 3pm. The day’s activities will be hosted in three different churches: St Stephens Church, St John’s Church, and St Julian’s Church. The event aims to engage younger generations and ensure that Julian’s legacy continues to be remembered and appreciated.
Overall, the half-term event aims to shed light on the accomplishments and significance of Julian of Norwich. Despite coming from humble origins, her book has survived for over 650 years and continues to inspire people today. By hosting an arts and crafts day as part of an international art exhibition, organizers hope to teach youngsters about Julian’s life and work, ensuring that her memory lives on for future generations.
