Google Maps reveals Norwich’s changing face from 2012 to now

The article explores how Google Street View allows people to travel back in time to 2012 and take a look at the streets of Norwich and the businesses that used to be there. It specifically focuses on seven former establishments and how they have changed over the years. These establishments include Pizza Hut, Sumo Salad, Carluccio’s, Kartel nightclub, Barclays bank, The Langtry pub, and Project nightclub.

Pizza Hut once occupied a prominent spot in Orford Place, but closed its doors in June 2016. The building was transformed into Five Guys, and although the original Pizza Hut is no longer there, there still remain three Pizza Huts in the city. Sumo Salad was a short-lived salad bar that closed only months after opening in Orford Way. The building has since reopened as the Korean eatery Seoul Born.

Carluccio’s, a popular Italian restaurant, closed in Christmas 2018 and has been replaced by retailer Urban Outfitter. Kartel nightclub in London Street closed after an incident in 2013, and the building is now occupied by bar and restaurant Gonzo’s. The former Barclays bank in 2012 is now home to the British Heart Foundation, and the former Natwest bank has been turned into the Cosy Club. The Langtry, a pub on Unthank Road, underwent rebranding and then became a burger restaurant called Pickle and Relish. Project nightclub in Riverside closed in March 2012, underwent a revamp and became Wonderland from 2012 to 2014, and is now Gravity Trampoline Park.

The article provides insights into the changes that have taken place over the years in Norwich, as former businesses have closed and been replaced by new establishments. It also reflects the evolving nature of the city’s commercial landscape, as older businesses are replaced with new ventures. The transformations serve as a reminder of the changing dynamics of commerce and remind readers to cherish the memories of the past while embracing the opportunities of the present.
