Do you recognise these Norwich pubs over the years?
In Norwich, there are several well-known venues that have undergone transformations over the years. One such venue is the William and Florence located in Unthank Road. Owned by Nick and Briony De’Ath, who have 25 years of hospitality experience, this bar and restaurant was previously known as The Mulberry Tree before being taken over in 2017. The De’Ath couple currently own five pubs in total.
Another popular venue in Norwich is the Last Pub Standing in King Street. After a four-month-long renovation in 2017, costing £200,000, this 17th-century building was brought back to life. Previously called the Kings pub, the Last Pub Standing was in a state of dereliction before it was taken over by new owners.
Located in Unthank Road, the Pear Tree Inn is a family-run pub, situated in the heart of the Golden Triangle. Over the years, this building has housed various businesses, such as Lust and Liquor in 2017 and No.79 Bar and Charcuterie in 2015. However, some may remember it as Pickle and Relish, a burger restaurant that operated from 2014 to 2015.
The Pig and Whistle in All Saints Green underwent a major refurbishment in 2017, thanks to a partnership with Craft Union Pubs. While the venue has had several name changes, it has been known as the Pig and Whistle since the 1970s. In 2008, it was called Mustard and functioned as a nightclub.
Lastly, the Fat Cat and Canary in Thorpe Road offers street food, Sunday roasts, and a selection of real ales. Until July of this year, the building boasted a mural of former Canaries manager Daniel Farke, which was then replaced by an image of Justin Fashanu, the first openly gay professional men’s footballer from the 1980s. Before landlord Christian Hodgkinson took over the pub in 2012, it was known as the Mustard Pot.
In conclusion, these beloved venues in Norwich have witnessed a transformation throughout the years. From changing names to refurbishments, each place has its own unique history and charm that adds to the vibrant atmosphere of the city.
