David Grealy appointed Catholic Diocese director of music
David Grealy, a native of Galway, Ireland, has been appointed as the new Director of Music for the Diocese of East Anglia. He comes to the diocese from the Diocese of Leeds, where he had been serving as the assistant organist at Leeds Cathedral and as a tutor for the diocesan schools’ singing and keyboard studies programmes. In his new role, Mr. Grealy will also lead the Diocese of East Anglia’s Schools Singing Programme, with the goal of bringing high-quality choral music into Catholic schools across the diocese.
The Bishop of East Anglia, the Rt Rev Peter Collins, welcomed David Grealy’s appointment, noting that he emerged as the top candidate from a highly competitive process. Mr. Grealy’s skills in liturgical music and leading adult and children’s choirs were put to the test over two days of evaluation. He will be responsible for continuing the tradition of excellent Catholic music-making at St John’s Cathedral and leading its choirs. Mr. Grealy’s background includes experience at Leeds Cathedral, Westminster, and in Europe, showcasing his high standard of musicianship.
David Grealy expressed his delight at taking up the position and emphasized his commitment to continuing the great work of his predecessor, Daniel Justin, in promoting a tradition of choral, organ, and liturgical music at the heart of worship in the cathedral community and wider diocese. Coming from previous experience in Catholic dioceses in Ireland, England, and Germany, Mr. Grealy looks forward to bringing his unique traditions and approach to sacred music to his new role in East Anglia. He is set to begin his new role in early January, eager to contribute his expertise to the community.
