100th birthday party held for Meadows Care Home resident

Lilian James recently celebrated her 97th birthday at the Meadows Care Home in Bowthorpe, where she has been a resident for six years. Despite her age, Lilian has remained fiercely independent and strong both physically and mentally. She is adored by both the staff and other residents at the care home and has a large friendship group. To mark her special day, staff, friends, and family organized a celebration, complete with presents and a photo montage showcasing key moments in her life.

Lilian was born on October 25, 1923, in the east end of London, and grew up as the fourth of ten children. She lived through the blitz, a period during World War II characterized by heavy and frequent bombing attacks on London and other cities in the UK. Lilian worked as a bus conductress for a period, but gave up the job after being bombed off a bus. During the war, she joined the Land Army and also worked with German and Italian Prisoners of War. Lilian even drove a tractor on a farm in Essex, where she witnessed rats as big as cats.

In 1949, Lilian married Jim, and together they had two daughters named Laura and Linda. They lived in various locations, including the east end, Hampshire, and Surrey, before Jim’s passing in 1981. Lilian continued working even after her retirement age, serving as a housekeeper for The Abbeyfield Society until the age of 72. She then moved to Northamptonshire to be closer to her sister before eventually relocating to Norfolk to be near one of her daughters and three grandchildren.

At the Meadows Care Home, Lilian enjoys participating in activities such as bingo, quizzes, and playing cards. She also has a passion for horse racing and enjoys placing the occasional bet. Despite her age, Lilian is tech-savvy and enjoys using Facetime to connect with her family. Notably, three of her brothers and a sister are still alive, adding to the close-knit nature of her family.

Overall, Lilian James’ 97th birthday celebration at the Meadows Care Home was a joyous occasion filled with love, appreciation, and gratitude. Lilian’s resilience and strength have been evident throughout her life, and she has forged deep connections with the people around her. Her milestone birthday is a testament to the lasting impact she has had on her family, friends, and the care home community.
