Swansea City 2-1 Norwich City: Championship player ratings

Angus Gunn

Did the flashy stuff well, but was left wanting when City needed a commanding presence to deal with Swansea’s assault on their box.

An impressive save to deny Oliver Cooper when his volley flew goalward late on, but was less than dominant in the goalmouth scramble that led to Bashir Humphreys’ match-winner late on.

Under increasing scrutiny from the Norwich fan base after a tough few weeks between the sticks. 5

Jack Stacey

By far City’s most creative player in a poor first hal showing, but allowed his good performance to tail off in a quiet second period.

Got in behind a high Swans defensive line on a number of occasions, delivering mixed quality in the final third but testing Carl Rushworth with a fierce drive.

Epitomised his side throughout, with his inconsistency matching that of City’s rollercoaster performance. Still emerged with more credit than the majority of his team-mates. 6

Shane Duffy

Good moments as there have been in most of his games for the club so far, but fatal errors that cost them the game.

At fault for the opener with his poor pass to Adam Forshaw, but made partial amends with a goal-saving block from Jerry Yates’ header late on.

His place in the team must be coming under question after a porous period for the Norwich defence. 4

Ben Gibson

As poor as his defensive partner as the former Middlesbrough man’s positive start to the campaign tails off at rapid pace.

Looked uncomfortable with the attentions of Yates as he provided a physical challenge at the back, and struggled to keep up when Swansea countered.

Must take part of the blame for the abdication of defensive responsibility in recent away games. 4

Dimitris Giannoulis

Struggled to combine effectively with his attacking team-mates, and allowed frustration to get the best of him defensively.

Picked out Gabriel Sara very well for the equaliser, but won’t look back on this as a highlight in what’s been a consistently strong season overall. 5

Adam Forshaw

Showed off the technical prowess his pedigree suggests, but, similarly to the rest of David Wagner’s charges, was let down by mistakes in big moments.

Played a role in the early concession, but was put in a difficult position by Duffy’s over-hit pass. Crunched into a few tackles, but wasn’t the defensive solution the German described him as upon his signing in the summer. 5

Kenny McLean

Worked hard as he always does, but lacked quality at times in his passing and off-ball work.

Part of a midfield pairing that needs work with Forshaw, while him and Sara struggled to re-adapt after the Brazilian dropped deeper late in the second half.

Clearly exasperated by his own performance at times, but it wasn’t all bad. 5

Tony Springett

A show of faith in the youngster from Wagner to give him his first league start in yellow and green. Clearly a player aligned with the City boss’ principles in his hard work.

Struggles at times to find the quality to match that, but made a few positive contributions in a performance he’ll likely be fairly pleased with. Left the pitch at 1-1, and may have felt he was part of a solid Championship away point had his colleagues managed to hold onto one.

Clever footwork and plenty of endeavour to dig out a good right-footed cross in the first half. Lacked the predatory instinct required to meet Jonathan Rowe’s low cross before he was substituted. 6

Gabriel Sara

Not his best display, but found one moment of quality to time his run well and score against the run of play. A similar goal to his strike on Saturday, as he returns to the style of play he was brought to Carrow Road to produce.

Otherwise a quiet display, with several squandered chances to find team-mates in advanced positions and create clear chances.

Multiple heavy balls through for Hwang denied him a chance to find his first in Norwich colours. Moved into a deeper role as Wagner made a spate of substitutions that was hard to understand. 6

Jonathan Rowe

A constant thorn in the side of a Swansea side that eventually resorted to fouling him.

Played a role in the Norwich goal, before fizzing a dangerous ball across the face of goal midway through the second. Also moved in that Wagner reshuffle, which appeared to come at the absolute worst time.

Didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. 7

Hwang Ui-Jo

Another absent showing after what looked like steps forward at the weekend.

Berated by Wagner early for his poor positioning in the press, and struggled to keep up when his more athletic team-mates broke forward on the counter.

Could have received better service from Stacey, Sara and Rowe at times, but must grasp his chance before it’s too late to do so in yellow and green. 5

SUBSTITUTES

Adam Idah (on for Hwang, 58)

Linked the play well, but a display that will be remembered for a shocking miss to win the game and his inability to clear the winning goal.

Przemyslaw Placheta’s cross came at him with pace, but the Irishman was well positioned and had an empty goal to nod into. A huge missed opportunity. 4

Przemyslaw Placheta (on for Forshaw, 58)

A largely poor cameo from Placheta, albeit one that included what should have been an assist for Idah.

His poor touch led to the corner from which Humphreys found the winner. 5

Onel Hernandez (on for Springett, 58)

Another typical performance from the Cuban, who threatened to come alive but produced few moments of real note.

One effort set up nicely by Stacey was fired straight down the middle. 5

Christian Fassnacht (on for Rowe, 78)

Made no real difference after his late introduction. 5
