Norman Lamb’s Norwich station frustration after bike theft

Sir Norman Lamb, former North Norfolk MP and current chairman of mental health service NHS Maudsley, had his bicycle stolen from the parking racks at Norwich Train Station. He had left his bike there before taking a train to London. When he returned to collect his bike, he found only the lock and back wheel remaining. Adding insult to injury, he also discovered a warning leaflet from Greater Anglia stating that his bike had been “abandoned, unused or causing an obstruction.” Mr. Lamb expressed his frustration at the theft and the notice, stating that it was obvious his bike had been stolen and questioning the purpose of the warning.

Mr. Lamb, who has strong memories associated with his bike, including cycling to Paris in 2009 and cycling to Arnhem, Holland, called for Greater Anglia to do more to protect people’s bicycles. He suggested that better measures should be in place, such as signage and improved CCTV coverage, to deter theft and ensure the safety of cyclists’ bikes. Mr. Lamb expressed concern that the lack of adequate security could discourage people from cycling and using “green transport.” Although he can afford to replace his stolen bike, he acknowledged that many others may not have the financial means to do so.

Greater Anglia has been approached for comment on the incident. It remains to be seen whether they will address Mr. Lamb’s concerns and take steps to improve the security and safety of bicycles at their train stations. As the city of Norwich encourages cycling and the use of environmentally friendly transportation options, it is crucial for train operators like Greater Anglia to prioritize the protection of cyclists’ property to maintain public trust and encourage more people to choose cycling as a mode of transport.
