Black Tower in Norwich blighted by beer bottles and needles
Black Tower and Wall, located in NR1, was originally used as part of the city’s wall and gate system to prevent boats from entering and to collect tolls at Carrow Bridge. However, the site, which dates back to the 14th century, is now a source of concern for local resident Lewis Golland. Golland, who lives nearby, has been distressed by the area’s uncleanliness and has found various types of litter, including beer cans and drug paraphernalia, scattered about.
Golland expressed his disappointment in the lack of respect for the natural beauty surrounding Norfolk, which initially drew him to the area. Recently, during a walk along the castle wall and tower, he discovered a “hideous mess” of rubbish, including discarded beer containers and bottles. He even encountered a used syringe on the ground, while nearby individuals were smoking cannabis. Golland believes that such an unkempt environment is unsightly and uncomfortable, particularly for women and children.
As a result of the worsening situation, Golland has taken matters into his own hands. He has created an Instagram account called @TidyMindsNorwich to raise awareness about the situation and aid in cleaning up the area. Equipped with bin loops and litter pickers, Golland documents the litter he encounters on his social media page. He hopes that by addressing the issue himself, he can help improve the cleanliness of the area, which he believes lacks the same level of care as other parts of Norwich.
Golland’s initiative highlights a growing problem of litter and uncleanliness at the historic Black Tower and Wall site. While this area was once an essential part of the city’s defense system, it has now become a highly displeasing place due to the accumulation of litter and drug paraphernalia. Golland’s efforts to clean up the area and raise awareness about the issue shed light on the need for greater respect and care for historical sites and the surrounding environment in Norwich.
