Benches on Marriott’s Way in Thorpe Marriott to be replaced

People in Thorpe Marriott were upset after benches along Marriott’s Way were vandalized, including one bench that had been ripped out entirely. Visitors to the tranquil spot expressed their disappointment that the benches have still not been fixed. Ann Lynn, a local resident, regularly visits the area to help with her mental health, but was disheartened to see the benches in such a bad state. She also mentioned other instances of vandalism, such as gate posts being removed and thrown away. Another resident, Adrian Crotch, a conservative district councillor, shared the sentiment, stating that while the area is still beautiful, it has lost some of its charm without the benches.

However, there is some hope for those who enjoy the beauty spot. Adrian Crotch confirmed that a replacement bench is currently being planned. Initially, there were concerns about adding the seats back to the tree due to its decaying state and safety concerns. As a result, it has been decided that a new picnic bench will be added near the pond. Crotch believes that this solution will be more sustainable and lasting, providing a place for people to enjoy moving forward.

The delay in replacing the benches has caused frustration among residents. The benches were vandalized in August 2020, and almost two years later, no action has been taken to restore them. Locals like Ann Lynn have found the situation disheartening, as the benches have lost their purpose and the area has suffered from further acts of vandalism, such as discarded shopping trolleys and large pieces of wood being thrown into the pond. Many residents rely on the tranquility of Marriott’s Way as a respite, and the absence of functioning benches has detracted from the experience.

Despite the disappointment, residents can take comfort in the assurance from Adrian Crotch that a replacement bench will be added soon. The decision to install a new picnic bench near the pond, rather than fixing the existing decaying tree, highlights the goal of sustainability and longevity. This solution will allow people to continue enjoying the beauty spot while minimizing the risk of future damage. It is hoped that the new bench will be a positive addition to the area and restore some of the charm that has been lost due to the vandalized and neglected benches.
