Norfolk police to increase speed checks over next two weeks
The National Police Chiefs’ Council has launched a national campaign to target drivers who pose a danger on the roads in the UK. This campaign will see heightened speed checks and enforcement until October 29. Several police teams, including the Roads and Armed Policing Team, the Road Casualty Reduction Team, the Commercial Vehicle Unit, and the Safety Camera Partnership, will work together to ensure the safety of the roads.
Norfolk Constabulary has reported that nearly 10% of all collisions resulting in death or serious injury are due to drivers travelling too fast for the road conditions. This alarming statistic has prompted Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Giles Orpen-Smellie, to speak out about the issue. Orpen-Smellie emphasizes that road deaths should not be taken lightly and urges drivers to exercise caution and consideration while driving. He also highlights the responsibility of everyone on the road, particularly when driving familiar routes, to be aware of and control their speed.
Drivers caught speeding during this campaign will face penalties such as a Traffic Offence Report (TOR), fines, points on their licence, or even court action. However, there is an alternative option for some drivers. Instead of receiving penalties, they have the opportunity to take part in a speed awareness course. This course aims to educate drivers about the dangers of excessive speed and the importance of adhering to speed limits.
Overall, this national campaign aims to tackle the issue of dangerous driving on the roads. With the collaboration of various police teams, the authorities hope to reduce the number of collisions and fatalities caused by speeding. Motorists are urged to drive with care and consideration, particularly when driving on familiar roads. By controlling their speed and being aware of their surroundings, drivers can contribute to making the roads safer for everyone.
