Spixworth man runs 70km birthday challenge for Compassion UK
Paul Coleman, a retired pastor from Spixworth, recently embarked on a challenging run to celebrate his 70th birthday. The 70-year-old set out to complete a 70km run (43.5 miles), which took him from his home to Wroxham, to Aylsham via the Bure Valley path, and then back to Norwich on Marriott’s Way. This was a significant endeavor for Paul, as he had only completed his first half marathon in May of this year as preparation for the run. Despite the difficulties he faced during the run, Paul was determined to complete it in order to raise funds for the charity Compassion UK, which he and his wife Linda sponsor children through and volunteer with regularly.
The main aim of Paul’s run was to raise funds for an agroecology project in Togo, Africa. He hoped to raise at least £7,000, which would benefit many families living in abject poverty in the country. He described the run as tough but was motivated by the knowledge that the funds raised would enable the construction of an agroecology center in Togo. This center has ambitious goals, aiming to deliver a three-year training program on agroecological techniques to over 2,000 young people and 1,500 caregivers by December 2025. The project aims to protect and empower children left vulnerable by poverty.
Despite the challenges of the run, Paul is well on his way to meeting his fundraising target. He has raised a total of £5,625 for Compassion UK so far and is still accepting donations through challenges.compassionuk.org. The funds raised will have a significant impact on the lives of families in Togo, providing them with opportunities to learn sustainable farming techniques and improve their livelihoods. Paul’s dedication to completing the run and supporting this cause is commendable, especially considering his age and the relatively short time he had been involved in long-distance running.
In conclusion, Paul Coleman’s 70km run to celebrate his 70th birthday is a testament to his determination and generosity. Despite the challenges he faced, he successfully completed the run and raised significant funds for the agroecology project in Togo, Africa. The project aims to empower and protect children living in poverty by providing them and their caregivers with training in sustainable farming techniques. Paul’s efforts have brought him closer to his fundraising target, and he hopes to continue receiving donations to make an even greater impact in Togo.
