Father Ignatius ghost said to still haunt Elm Hill, Norwich
Elm Hill in Norwich is a charming street known for its cobblestones and medieval buildings. Behind each building lies a unique story, and one of the spookiest tales has recently been revealed by Edward L Norfolk, a city ghost hunter and history enthusiast who runs Haunted and Abandoned Norfolk. He reveals that Elm Hill, which was once thriving during the weaving trade, eventually became a slum when the industry declined. In 1926, it was scheduled for demolition, but the Norwich Society stepped in and saved it by a single vote, leading to its renovation.
Since its renovation, Elm Hill has gained fame as a filming location for Hollywood films like Stardust and Jingle Jangle. However, it is also believed to be home to a ghost that still roams the street to this day. According to city folklore, this ghost is none other than Father Ignatius, who was forced to flee Norwich in 1866. Father Ignatius used to live at number 16 Elm Hill, where he built his own church. He was known as a keen street preacher who would curse those who refused to join him in prayer. Legend says that those who were cursed experienced unfortunate fates.
However, Father Ignatius’ time in the city was marred by scandal and allegations of brutality behind closed doors, which led to his eviction due to rent arrears. He fled to London and passed away in 1908. Despite his departure, his spirit is said to have been spotted multiple times on Elm Hill, clutching a Bible and cursing at those who fail to acknowledge his presence. This adds an eerie layer to the street’s already rich history.
Elm Hill’s story reflects the history of Norwich itself, with its rise in the weaving industry and subsequent decline, as well as the preservation efforts by the Norwich Society. The street’s appearance in popular films highlights its enduring charm and allure. However, the presence of Father Ignatius’ ghost adds a haunting element to the street, reminding visitors of its dark past and the tales that lie hidden behind its beautiful façade. Whether or not one believes in ghosts, Elm Hill’s history and the stories it holds make it a fascinating destination for both history buffs and ghost enthusiasts alike.
