Norwich City: Sao Paulo frustration at underselling Gabby Sara

Sara moved to Norwich for a fee that could eventually rise to be a club record after he joined as the club’s first recruit from South America after years of work in the region post-Brexit.

The midfielder has blossomed since his move to England and was named Player of the Season for the Canaries last year. Sara has started this season brightly, winning accolades, plaudits and registering six goal contributions in 10 appearances.

Norwich fought off interest in the summer transfer window to keep the 24-year-old at the club and he has become a prominent part of their Championship side.

Sara moved to Carrow Road in the summer of 2022 as one of two permanent additions during Dean Smith’s reign. He netted seven goals in 40 appearances in his debut campaign.

Sao Paulo sporting director Carlos Belmonte has conceded that Norwich got the better end of the deal when purchasing Sara, but believes his departure has enabled the Brazilian club to hold a strong negotiating position in the future.

“Until before this window, we sold out of necessity. I always give the example of Gabriel Sara, who we sold for 9 million pounds,” Belmonte told Brazilian outlet Terra.

“It’s excellent money, but Sara is worth more than that. Now we no longer necessarily need to sell, the situation is different. Sales can occur, but at the value we deem correct.”

The Brazilian club retain a sell on clause that would enable them to a reported 10pc should Sara move on from Norwich.

Sara’s has become a pivotal player in David Wagner’s system and was influential in last weekend’s victory over Birmingham.

He added to his goal tally in their 2-1 defeat to Swansea in a more advanced role. Wagner heaped praise on the Brazilian after his contribution last weekend.

“He is a perfect example that if you play to his strength, then he is so dangerous for goals and can take care of the ball. He can also compete in the air,” Wagner said.

“He is untypical for a Brazilian and has this British fighting spirit. It’s great to have him in our team.”
