Norwich set for first female dean in 900 years
The first female Dean in the Cathedral’s 900 year history, Jane Hedges was installed in front of a congregation of over 900 people and takes over from the Very Revd Graham Smith who retired in October 2013. Jane joins the Cathedral following her time as Archdeacon of Westminster and Sub-Dean of Westminster Abbey.
As part of her institution ceremony, the new Dean will be blessed by the Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham James, and welcomed by civic and community leaders, including the Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Mr Richard Jewson, JP, and Lord Mayor of Norwich, Judith Lubbock, before being installed by the Precentor and Vice-Dean of Norwich Cathedral, the Rev Canon Jeremy Haselock. Dean Hedges will then be welcomed by the Cathedral Chapter and anointed by the Bishop of Norwich.
The inauguration of the Dean’s new ministry was completed on Sunday, 22 June, when she presided at the Cathedral Eucharist for the first time.
