Norwich City: Angus Gunn on Scotland Euro 2024 hopes

Gunn started as the Three Lions eased to a 3-1 win at Hampden Park in an international friendly on Tuesday.

The loss was Scotland’s first in over a year, but they maintained a 100pc qualifying record in last Friday’s 3-0 win over Cyprus. They can secure their place at next summer’s tournament with a win over Spain next month, and that’s what Gunn hopes the Scots can focus on.

“I think we’ve put ourselves in an unbelievable position,” he said. “The fact we have to go away to Spain and get a result, it puts more pressure on us, but I’m looking forward to that. Hopefully we can do what we did here at Hampden and beat them again.

“We lost to a top team and we are disappointed. Obviously the other result didn’t go the way we wanted in the other game, so we will hopefully go to Spain and do the job there.

“England are a top team. They played very well and they will be fully delighted with the win.

“As I said before, it shows how far we have come that we are disappointed in losing this game. I think we can learn from it, take it into next month and hopefully in the summer as well.”

Gunn has now returned to City’s Colney base ahead of the Canaries’ meeting with his former loan club Stoke on Saturday. He’s one of several Norwich players who have been on international duty, with fellow Scot Kenny McLean an unused substitute in the defeat to England.

Deadline-day signing Hwang Ui-Jo featured as a substitute in both of South Korea’s UK games, while Tony Springett made his Irish under-21 debut and Dimitris Giannoulis played twice for Greece.

Adam Idah scored his second goal for the Republic of Ireland from the penalty spot, but couldn’t stop the Boys in Green sliding to defeat against the Netherlands.

Jonathan Rowe was called up by England’s under-20 for their training camp this week, with their next fixture against Romania in October.
