Met Office issues amber heat warning for Norfolk this weekend

The alert has been put in place for the East of England and other parts of the UK including the South West and West Midlands. 

A yellow alert, which is less serious than an amber warning, was issued on Wednesday but has now been upgraded.

It will be in place from 9am on Friday, June 9, until Monday, June 12, during which people are advised to keep out of the sun during the hottest part of the day between 11am and 3pm.

Parts of Norfolk are going to be hotter than the Algarve this weekend, with some parts of the county seeing highs of 27C.

The warm weather is due to Storm Oscar which has been battering the Canary Islands.

The storm will drive a warm plume of air to the east as it moves across the Atlantic, according to the Met Office.

The hot weather will be welcomed by many after the county was colder than most parts of the UK this month. 

Graham Midge, a spokesman for the Met Office, explained an area of high pressure in the northwest of the UK left Norfolk with cooler and overcast temperatures.
