Norwich City: Josh Sargent clarifies how ‘freak’ injury occurred
The US international has undergone surgery after visiting a specialist in London last week.
Sargent’s injury forced City into a late and unexpected foray into the transfer market as they signed Hwang Ui-jo on a season-long loan deal from Nottingham Forest on Deadline Day.
City will now face a four-month period without their number nine, and Sargent has clarified how the ‘freak’ incident occurred during their 4-0 victory over Huddersfield.
“The funny thing is that everyone thinks it happened when the keeper landed on me and that was when I got hurt. But it was actually when I blocked the ball and I landed on it weird,” Sargent told the Scuffed podcast.
“I think I had so much adrenaline going and I saw the ball going towards the goal that my instinct was to go and tap it in.
“When I landed again I had no power to put any weight on it and that’s why I just collapsed after. It was hard to be happy about the goal and I could feel that it was not going to be a good injury.
“I even told him (Lee Nicholls) after because he was a bit worried saying ‘did I do it?’ but it wasn’t his fault. I promise.
“It was a freak thing that happened in the game. I landed on my ankle wrong, but I’m not too sure on the specifics yet. It’s a bit swollen and we have to wait for the swelling to go down before we can really assess it and figure out exactly what is going on.”
Sargent’s injury and the severity of it forced Norwich into a late dash in the transfer market.
The American international underwent surgery on Monday and looks set to return in January at the very latest.
David Wagner confirmed the diagnosis after City’s defeat to Rotherham at the weekend, with the club then being forced to react in the transfer market on Deadline Day by signing Hwang.
