Norfolk man’s vision after near-death experience

A Second Chance: Trevor Palmer’s Extraordinary Journey Between Life and Death

In a remarkable testament to faith and resilience, 77-year-old Trevor Palmer experienced what many would describe as a miracle at Norwich’s Norfolk & Norwich Hospital. The former Norfolk Fire Brigade technician, who retired in 2007 after a career in Hethersett, went in for what should have been a routine heart ablation procedure to treat his atrial fibrillation on August 20, 2024. What followed was far from routine—Trevor was clinically dead for 15 minutes before doctors managed to resuscitate him. “I remember signing the paperwork but nothing else until I woke up three days later in a side room with a nurse there,” Trevor recalled of the experience that would profoundly change his perspective on life and spirituality. After regaining consciousness, his doctor delivered the sobering news that things hadn’t gone according to plan. During the procedure, while under full anesthesia, Trevor had suffered a cardiac arrest. The medical team had resuscitated him and placed him on end-of-life support in the ICU, with chaplaincy services engaged—a grim indication of his precarious condition, which was further complicated by pneumonia. Yet somehow, against medical expectations, Trevor recovered with remarkable speed.

What makes Trevor’s story particularly extraordinary isn’t just his physical recovery from death, but what he experienced during those moments when his heart had stopped beating. While unconscious for three days, Trevor had what he describes as a powerful vision. “In the dream I found myself in a large peaceful, quiet room,” he explained. In this vision, he saw his pastor from Taverham Evangelical Church, Noel Wood, standing beside his hospital bed holding a Bible and reading something over him. Also present were his son David and his wife Susan. What makes this vision particularly compelling is that Trevor experienced it from a perspective outside his own body—”I was stood up looking at them and at myself lying on the bed. They all looked so sad.” Upon waking, Trevor felt profoundly transformed. “I was at peace but different than I was before,” he reflected. “In a way I felt that I had my old body but I had a new spirit. I felt very much more at peace than I had for a long while.” This sense of tranquility and transformation would become central to his understanding of why he had been given a second chance at life.

The validation of Trevor’s experience came days later when he was moved out of the end-of-life ward and received a visit from Pastor Noel. Trevor asked his pastor what specific passage he had been reading when visiting him during his unconscious state—information Trevor could not possibly have known through conventional means. Astonished, Pastor Noel confirmed that he had indeed been reading to Trevor and revealed the exact scripture: Psalm 118:17, which declares, “I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.” For Trevor, this confirmation was more than coincidence; it was divine purpose. “And I knew straight away why the Lord had allowed this to happen—so that I could give that testimony to other people,” he said. The alignment between his supernatural experience and this biblical passage cemented Trevor’s belief that his revival had a specific spiritual purpose—to share his story and the message of faith it contained with others who might be seeking answers about life beyond death.

In the eighteen months following his near-death experience, Trevor has undergone seven additional major surgical procedures and been diagnosed with amyloidosis of the heart, a terminal condition. Yet despite these ongoing health challenges, he maintains an extraordinary perspective on his situation. “I have not felt afraid at all but at peace,” he affirms. “I sincerely believe that God allowed me to come back to do his work.” Trevor has observed that in today’s society, there exists a profound curiosity about supernatural phenomena—whether angels, ghost stories, or occult practices—and people seem genuinely interested in hearing about his experience of briefly crossing the threshold between life and death. Rather than being bitter about his health challenges, Trevor views his current situation with remarkable equanimity: “I understand the situation but I am really happy to be here and also happy to be with the Lord—so I class myself as a winner all round.” This perspective reflects a profound spiritual transformation that transcends the typical fear of death and embraces both his remaining time on earth and whatever may come after.

Trevor’s wife Susan has been by his side throughout this extraordinary journey, adjusting to the new reality of their lives together. “I feel very happy to have Trevor back but sad that he is having to take one day at a time now,” she shared. “But I know that God will look after me when Trevor is no longer around.” Her faith mirrors Trevor’s own and provides a foundation for them both as they navigate the uncertainty of his condition. Trevor himself remains focused on what he believes to be his divinely appointed mission: “All I know is that while I am here I have to just keep on telling people what God has done for me. God is totally in charge and there is nothing I can do about it. Whatever my destiny is, it will be with God—his grace is good.” He has prayed to maintain his compassionate spirit, saying, “I have prayed that I keep the soul in me that cares for others and I don’t become hard and selfish because of my experience.” This concern for maintaining his humanity even as he contemplates his mortality reveals the depth of Trevor’s character and the sincerity of his spiritual journey.

Pastor Noel Wood, who unwittingly played such a pivotal role in Trevor’s story, describes the experience as “quite incredible,” affirming his belief that “God definitely stepped in and did a miracle for Him.” The pastor’s perspective adds another dimension to Trevor’s account, validating the spiritual significance that Trevor himself attributes to his near-death experience and subsequent recovery. “I do believe that God saves us from death for a reason,” Pastor Noel reflected, “and it is great to see that Trevor is getting his story out there and giving God the glory for his miraculous recovery.” As Trevor continues to share his testimony with others, he remains convinced that his purpose is clear: “God has brought me through this so that I can tell people how powerful, loving and gracious he is. He is in charge despite what this world thinks.” In a world often characterized by uncertainty and fear—particularly regarding death and what might lie beyond—Trevor Palmer’s extraordinary journey offers a perspective grounded in faith, purpose, and an unexpected peace that transcends his circumstances.
