Church offers free interactive children’s adventure

Local Church Offers Festive Adventure for Children During Diss Christmas Light Up Ceremony
In the heart of South Norfolk, a heartwarming initiative is set to bring the Christmas spirit alive for local children. Diss United Reformed Church is preparing to host “Go Bethlehem!” – a free interactive adventure for young visitors during the town’s annual Christmas Light Up Ceremony on Saturday, November 29. This creative journey through the church offers children a chance to experience the magic of Christmas preparations through hands-on activities in a welcoming environment.
Ruth Bridges, the church’s dedicated Community Worker, explains the concept with enthusiasm: “Every year at the Light Up Ceremony in Diss, we host a free children’s interactive journey through our church. This year we’re focusing on getting ready for Christmas with our ‘Go Bethlehem!’ theme.” The experience has been thoughtfully designed with multiple engaging stations where children can immerse themselves in the Christmas story. Young participants will have the opportunity to pose for photos as the Angel Gabriel, help organize Mary’s preparations for baby Jesus, assist Joseph with building a cot by hammering nails, and even find sheep for shepherds to bring to the newborn Christ child.
The adventure culminates in a meaningful way as children reach the church’s nativity tableau, bringing the biblical journey to life before their eyes. But the experience doesn’t end there – the young visitors will then be welcomed into the church hall for complimentary hot chocolate and a chance to create their own Christmas cards. This thoughtful conclusion to the journey allows children to begin their own Christmas preparations while reflecting on the meaning behind the season. The entire experience connects the traditional nativity story with practical holiday preparations in a way that’s accessible and meaningful for children.
Located at Diss United Reformed Church on Mere Street (IP22 4A), the event runs from 2pm to 5pm, making it convenient for families to attend as part of the town’s Christmas celebrations. The church has integrated their offering into the broader community festivities, creating a warm space for families to step away from the hustle and bustle of the Light Up Ceremony while still engaging with seasonal traditions. Parents looking for a meaningful activity that captures the true spirit of Christmas will find this interactive journey offers both entertainment and gentle education about Christmas traditions.
Beyond the “Go Bethlehem!” adventure, families can enjoy other attractions at the venue including a visit with Santa Claus and an entertaining Punch and Judy show. This combination of activities creates a well-rounded experience that appeals to children with different interests and energy levels. The church has clearly thought about creating a comprehensive family experience that serves the community during this special time of year, bringing together spiritual meaning and festive fun.

As this annual tradition continues to evolve and grow, the Diss United Reformed Church demonstrates its commitment to serving families and creating meaningful Christmas memories for children in the South Norfolk community. The “Go Bethlehem!” adventure stands as a beautiful example of how local churches can connect with their communities during the holiday season, offering both spiritual significance and joyful celebration.
