Love for Broads inspires chaplain’s mission
Rev. Briant Smith, a former biologist and Methodist circuit chaplain, has spent over 50 years developing a deep love for the Norfolk Broads. In 2011, he took on the role of part-time chaplain for the Broads, combining his passions for nature, art, and spirituality. He has been actively involved in developing educational resources for school visits, running courses, walks, and sailings, and serving as the Vice President for Broads Tourism. Additionally, he is focused on building relationships with tourists and businessmen in the area and has played a significant role in the sustainable tourism blueprint for the Broads. Smith believes that the natural world can be a source of spiritual exploration and development, and his work includes helping schools engage with the Broads through wildlife, environment, literacy, and weather, with the goal of making these resources nationally available.
Smith’s personal journey towards spirituality was deeply influenced by a powerful experience of the Creator’s wonders through nature. This has led him to develop resources for ‘seekers and searchers’ visiting the Broads, allowing them to immerse themselves in the area’s beauty. His Broadside series of photographs and meditations seek to encourage reflection, and various Pilgrim trails are available through the chaplaincy appointed by the East Anglia District of the Methodist Church.
The Norfolk Broads offer an abundance of spiritual heritage, culture, and history, including ancient religious buildings and historic icons, which continue to aid individuals and groups in their personal development. Smith emphasizes that an increasing number of people are seeking spiritual meaning in their lives, and part of this search involves a deeper appreciation of the natural world. He hopes that through his work, visitors will be able to stop, look, and immerse themselves in the moment, contemplating the presence of God in the beauty around them. His ultimate goal is to develop resources that allow individuals to leave the material world behind and connect with the natural world, fostering spiritual growth and development.
Smith’s work also extends to fostering relationships with local schools and businesses in the area, with a focus on developing resources for school visits during which students can engage with the Broads through a range of subjects. While the resources are currently aimed at local schools, Smith hopes for them to become a national resource. His deep passion for the Norfolk Broads and dedication to combining nature, art, and spirituality has made a significant impact on the area and its visitors, providing a unique opportunity for spiritual exploration and growth.
