Norwich City: Angus Gunn interview on Southampton, Farke
The story of Angus Gunn, the 27-year-old goalkeeper for Norwich City, is one that has been influenced by his family heritage, particularly that of his father Bryan, a legendary player for the Canaries. Gunn Jr. credits his family’s reputation as playing a significant part in his decision to become a goalkeeper. His journey began when, as an eight-year-old trialling for Norwich outfield, he was unexpectedly thrust into goal due to an injured goalkeeper, leading to his eventual signing to the academy at under-9 level. Despite initial reluctance from his mother, he quickly found joy in the position and never looked back.
Gunn’s career took a major turn in 2011 when, after returning to Norwich following a season on loan at his former club, he signed with Manchester City at the age of 25. His father’s job with his agency in Manchester played a crucial role in helping him to settle into the busy city. Despite being originally from the quieter Norwich, he quickly adapted to life in Manchester, and eventually made his Premier League debut with Southampton. However, after a promising start, his time at Southampton took a downward turn with a disappointing loan to Stoke City and a less-than-ideal reception from then-boss Ralph Hassenhutl.
Following a less-than-ideal experience at Southampton, Gunn made what he considered to be a career-defining move back to Carrow Road, the home of Norwich City. He describes his return as a move he couldn’t refuse, given that the manager at the time, Daniel Farke, wanted him and that he had a positive rapport with Farke. This decision ultimately paid off, as he went on to become the first-choice goalkeeper and has had the opportunity to contribute to his country’s journey to the Euros.
Angus Gunn’s story in professional football has been shaped by the influence of his family, particularly his father, Bryan, and the mutual respect and trust he has found in the managers and teams he has played for. Despite facing setbacks and challenges along the way, his perseverance and positive attitude have led him to gain experience and success both at the club and international level. As he continues his football journey, he undoubtedly has ambitious goals to continue to make a significant impact in the sport.
