The Sandy Lane play park in Taverham Recreation Ground was recently subjected to “mindless vandalism” just four months after it opened to the public. The incidents included the tearing off of a trampoline from its frame, as well as scorching of the site’s safety surfacing. This has led to disappointment from both the local county and district councillor for Taverham, Stuart Clancy, and Samantha Salmons, clerk of Taverham Parish Council, who were both looking forward to the play area being open to the wider community.
The play park was reopened in June after undergoing a revamp worth more than £170,000. The project included an overhaul of the existing facilities, in addition to the development of separate junior and toddler areas. The vandalism has since been repaired, and the play park is open for everyone to use. However, there are now calls for a zero-tolerance approach to be implemented, with support for the use of CCTV to prevent further incidents from occurring.
Taverham is currently considered the safest neighborhood in Norfolk, with a low rate of criminal activity. However, there is still a sense of urgency to stay on top of incidents such as vandalism, as they can quickly spread if not curtailed early. There is a need for a crackdown on this kind of activity before it has the chance to grow, and for preventative measures to be put in place to protect community facilities like the Sandy Lane play park.
