Gary’O’Neil on James Maddison’s instant impression at Norwich City

James Maddison’s career has seen significant progression since his breakthrough season with Norwich City in 2017/18. Under the guidance of manager Daniel Farke, Maddison caught the attention of clubs across Europe, leading to a £22 million move to Leicester. He then made a switch to Tottenham during the most recent summer transfer window after spending five years with the Foxes.

Currently, Tottenham is leading the Premier League table and remains unbeaten in their first nine matches. Maddison has played a major role in their successful start, contributing to eight goals so far. His impressive performances have earned him praise as one of the key factors behind the team’s early-season form. He continued to thrive in their 2-0 victory over Fulham, scoring another goal.

During his time at Norwich, Maddison briefly trained with the first team while on loan at Coventry. Former Norwich midfielder and current Wolves manager, Gary O’Neil, who witnessed this firsthand, recalled being impressed by Maddison’s confidence and belief in his abilities. O’Neil cited Maddison’s work ethic and unwavering self-belief as key factors in his success.

Following his loan spell at Coventry, Maddison joined Aberdeen for further development. Meanwhile, O’Neil moved on from Norwich to join Bristol City. He has since turned to management and currently leads Wolverhampton Wanderers, winning three of his first nine games in charge. Maddison, on the other hand, has set his sights on achieving consistency and continued success with Tottenham under the leadership of manager Ange Postecoglou.

As Maddison’s career continues on an upward trajectory, the midfielder will be looking to make further strides in his quest for improvement. With his impressive contributions to Tottenham’s early-season success, the future looks promising for Maddison as he aims to reach new heights in his footballing journey.
