Norfolk Christians are honoured by the Queen
A number of Norfolk Christians have been honoured by the Queen for their community service in her birthday honours list.
Malcolm Fisher has been made an MBE for services to the heritage of Norfolk’s churches through the Norfolk Churches Trust as its former company secretary. The 76-year-old retired Barclays Bank worker joined the Norfolk Churches Trust – which helps to protect churches through financial aid and advice – in 1995.
“Being involved with the Norfolk Churches Trust was quietly rewarding. I am thankful for what has been achieved but there is still so much more to be done,” he told the EDP.
The Rev Heather Wright, from Sprowston, has received the British Empire Medal for services to the community, in particular deaf-blind people.
Heather was ordained as a non-stipendary curate, before becoming priest, at St Thomas Heigham church 20 years ago. She has been supporting the deaf-blind community for almost 40 years through Deafblind UK and is still a volunteer today.
Glenda Tooke, 61, from Rollesby, has received the British Empire Medal for fundraising and community work. Glenda has been raising money for Norfolk Methodist churches for the past 30 years, in particular through a biennial exhibition of her own amazing collection of 1,000 Christmas trees.
Also honoured is hospital governor and former consultant surgeon Hugh Sturzaker, 75, from Great Yarmouth has been made an MBE for services to health and the community in Great Yarmouth.
Hugh is lead governor at James Paget NHS Foundation Trust and was the driving force behind the project to create the Louise Hamilton Centre in the grounds of the hospital which provides support and care for those with life-threatening illnesses. He’s also campaigned tirelessly to raise money for the Great Yarmouth Minster, which is the largest parish church in England.
