“Trips like this give the children an opportunity to do something different in a place they might not necessarily go with their families” – siblings create their own artwork during a day of fun at the Sainsbury Centre
The city of Norwich was abuzz with creativity and excitement as a group of young siblings embarked on an unforgettable adventure to the renowned Sainsbury Centre, an international museum located on the University of East Anglia campus. This special outing was made possible by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), an organization dedicated to supporting children and their families during times of need. The trip was specifically designed for siblings who have either lost a loved one or have a brother or sister receiving care at The Nook, a place of solace and comfort. For four lucky children, this day was an opportunity to step away from the challenges they face and indulge in a world of art, imagination, and joy.
As they arrived at the Sainsbury Centre, the children’s eyes widened with wonder as they were introduced to a vast array of artwork and exhibits from around the globe. But before delving into the world of art, they got to warm up with a fun-filled activity that had them laughing and playing together. Under the shade of a parachute play canopy, they enjoyed games that sparked their creativity and energy. Then, it was time to unleash their inner artists as they attached shiny, silver streamers to balls and launched them into the sky, watching in awe as they created sparkling comets that danced in the air. This interactive experience not only brought them joy but also taught them about the beauty of art and science combined. As they worked together, their faces lit up with excitement, and their smiles were a testament to the magic of this special day.
As the morning progressed, the children were given the opportunity to express their creativity in a more structured setting. Using different-sized square and rectangular guttering, they worked in groups to create their own unique sculptures. This activity not only allowed them to think outside the box but also encouraged teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. As they manipulated the guttering, they began to see their ideas take shape, and their imagination knew no bounds. The room was filled with the sound of chatter, laughter, and the occasional sound of guttering being rearranged as they brought their creations to life. With each passing minute, their confidence grew, and their artistic talents began to shine through. It was a truly heartwarming experience, watching these young minds explore the world of art and discover the joy of creation.
After a morning filled with creativity and play, the children took a break for lunch, refueling for the next part of their adventure. As they sat down to eat, they couldn’t help but talk about their favorite activities from the morning and what they were looking forward to doing next. With full bellies and renewed energy, they set off to explore the artwork on display in the gallery. As they wandered through the exhibits, they were given a challenge: to draw their favorite piece in just two minutes. The room was filled with the sound of pencils scratching against paper as they worked tirelessly to capture the essence of their chosen artwork. But that wasn’t all – they were also asked to work together to create a story, linking everyone’s sketches together. This collaborative effort brought out the best in them, as they learned to appreciate each other’s unique perspectives and talents. As they sat together, sharing their drawings and weaving a narrative, it was clear that this experience was not only about art but also about building bonds and creating lasting memories.
For Clare Oakley, EACH’s Groups and Events Co-ordinator at The Nook, this trip was a resounding success. “It was a fun-filled, very enjoyable day,” she exclaimed, beaming with pride. “Trips like this give the children an opportunity to do something different in a place they might not necessarily go with their families. It was lovely to see them get creative, learn about different types of art, and, crucially, enjoy being together.” Clare was joined by EACH Play Specialist Heidi Foster and volunteer Roisin Murray, who all played a vital role in making this day special for the children. As they watched the children laugh, play, and explore, they knew that this experience would have a lasting impact on their young lives. The Sainsbury Centre, with its stunning artwork and welcoming staff, provided the perfect backdrop for this adventure, and EACH was grateful for their support and hospitality.
As the day drew to a close, the children said their goodbyes, tired but happy, with memories that they would cherish for a long time. For EACH, this trip was a reminder of the importance of providing unique experiences for children who face challenges in their daily lives. By giving them the opportunity to explore, create, and have fun, EACH is helping to build resilience, confidence, and a sense of community. As Clare and her team look forward to their next visit, they know that they will continue to make a positive impact on the lives of these young siblings, providing them with a sense of belonging and connection that will stay with them forever. The Sainsbury Centre, with its treasure trove of artwork and interactive exhibits, will remain a special place in the hearts of these children, a symbol of the joy and wonder that can be found in the world of art and imagination. And as they grow and develop, they will carry the memories of this special day with them, a reminder of the power of creativity, friendship, and the unwavering support of organizations like EACH.
