Starting a church building project? Revd Mark Capron shares his experience in Dersingham.

It’s a moment of great joy and accomplishment for our church community as we finally complete a six-year project to restore and revitalize our beloved church. This journey has required unwavering dedication and perseverance from a small, key team of individuals who have worked tirelessly to bring our church back to life. As we stand here today, we can proudly say that our efforts have paid off, and our church is now equipped with the necessary facilities to provide a warm and welcoming space for worship, hospitality, and community outreach. The newly installed kitchen facility blends seamlessly into the church’s architecture, while the addition of a fully accessible toilet and baby changing facilities has been a game-changer for our weekly baby and toddler groups, as well as other community activities.
The impact of this project cannot be overstated. We’ve created a space that is not only functional but also inviting, allowing us to offer more to our community than ever before. On Monday mornings, our baby changing facilities are in high demand, with both rooms often in use at the same time. We’ve also launched lent lunches and coffee mornings, which have become a staple of our community’s social calendar. The possibilities are endless, and we’re excited to explore new ways to utilize our facilities, including the use of our new ovens and other amenities. Our mission is to serve and love our community, and with these new facilities, we’re better equipped to do just that. Whether it’s providing a warm meal, a listening ear, or a safe space for families to gather, we’re committed to being a beacon of hope and hospitality in our village.
One of the most creative and successful fundraising initiatives we undertook was organizing two sponsored abseils down our church tower. This unique event allowed people from both within and outside our church community to come together, challenge themselves, and raise vital funds for our project. The response was overwhelming, with over 100 participants and hundreds of spectators gathering to cheer them on. The abseils raised an impressive £25,000, which helped kick-start our project and generate momentum. However, what was truly remarkable was the sense of community and camaraderie that emerged during these events. People from all walks of life came together, supporting one another and celebrating each other’s achievements. It was a powerful reminder of the impact that creative and inclusive fundraising initiatives can have on building connections and fostering a sense of belonging.
As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of the importance of thinking outside the box and embracing creative solutions. Our abseil events were a perfect example of this, and they not only raised vital funds but also brought our community together in a unique and memorable way. My top tip for anyone embarking on a church building project would be to embrace creativity and innovation in your fundraising efforts. Don’t be afraid to try new things, engage with your community, and think outside the box. By doing so, you’ll not only raise essential funds but also build connections, foster a sense of community, and create lasting memories. Whether it’s a sponsored abseil, a bake sale, or a community fair, the possibilities are endless, and the impact can be profound.
