Norwich’s Johannes Hoff Thorup wants VAR after errors in Derby win

Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup believes that VAR should be introduced in the Championship, despite benefiting from its absence in their recent win over Derby. The ball seemed to have gone out of play in the build-up to two of Borja Sainz’s goals, but Thorup still supports the idea of having video technology to assist with making calls in the league. He stressed the need to support referees in making difficult decisions and suggested that VAR could help in achieving greater accuracy in officiating matches.

On the other hand, Derby boss Paul Warne is less enthusiastic about the idea of implementing VAR in the Championship, even though he acknowledged that one of his team’s late goals was offside. While Warne jokingly admitted that he would have liked to have had VAR available during their match against Norwich, he expressed concerns about the increasing complexity of the game and the subjectivity involved in making calls. Despite some controversial incidents in the game, Warne believes that decisions will always be open to interpretation, even with the use of video technology.

Thorup’s Norwich secured their third victory of the season and currently sit in ninth place in the table, while Derby, who were promoted from League One last season, are 14th following back-to-back defeats. The match between the two teams highlighted the potential impact of VAR in resolving contentious decisions and ensuring more fair play. Both managers shared their differing opinions on the matter, with Thorup advocating for the introduction of VAR and Warne expressing reservations about its potential impact on the game.

Overall, the debate over VAR in the Championship continues to be a topic of discussion among managers, players, and fans alike. While some advocate for its implementation to improve the accuracy of officiating, others have concerns about the potential drawbacks and complexities that come with using video technology in football. As teams compete in the league and encounter situations where VAR could have made a difference, the conversation around whether or not to introduce this system will likely persist as the season progresses. Ultimately, the decision to implement VAR in the Championship will depend on various factors and considerations from the league’s governing bodies.
