Norwich inter-church golf day tees off next month
The Covenant Cup, an inter-church golf day, will take place for the first time on Friday September 8 at Costessey Park Golf Club. Peter Bending reports.
The day, organised by Deon Ruiters, will start with coffee and bacon rolls followed by 18 holes of the Costessey Park Golf Club, just northwest of Norwich.
Golfers will play a Stableford format, which awards points rather than simply counting strokes.
“We want the golf day to be fun but also competitive. Stableford, I feel is a fair format and levels the playing field a bit. The highest score wins the competition. There will be other prizes up for grabs; nearest pin, longest drive and nearest the pin in two,” said Deon.
For passionate sport enthusiast Deon, he hopes this event will be the start of something more.
“Looking at my sporting life, I do feel I could have been a better witness, so part of doing this is to be intentional about sharing our faith in a fun and non-threatening way.
“The plan for future events is to have a meal afterwards, have a guest share a thought for 10 minutes – an encouragement from the Bible or a story – and do the prize giving. I would love golfers in the local church to invite friends, especially those not in church,” said Deon.
For this first event, Deon is looking for a group of 20 golfers but can accommodate more. It is open to men and women. Golfers will be divided into four ball pairs or can come as a four ball. Interested golfers should email Deon to reserve a place and payment will be taken on the day.
Closing date for sign-up is Friday August 25 but will operate on a first come, first serve basis.
Deon concluded: “My aim is to build a community of Christian golfers, play golf on a regular basis, create a platform to be witness through golf and enjoy fellowship.’
