Norwich church hears about hospital chaplains

The work of hospital chaplains is often unsung, yet it brings comfort, solace, and spiritual support to countless individuals in their most vulnerable moments. Rev Adrian Woodbridge, lead chaplain at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUHFT) Spiritual Healthcare, recently shared the invaluable work that he and his team do at the hospital and beyond. Speaking at Servant’s Church in Thorpe St Andrew, Adrian shed light on the crucial role that chaplains play in providing compassionate care and spiritual support to patients, staff, and visitors. The event, which was part of the church’s Snack ‘n’ Chat series, drew attendees from both the congregation and the local community, who were eager to learn more about the team’s work.

As Adrian explained, the NNUHFT Spiritual Healthcare team is dedicated to being alongside people through life’s experiences, offering a listening ear, a comforting presence, and a helping hand whenever needed. Their strapline, “we are here to offer compassionate care and spiritual support to all,” encapsulates the team’s mission to provide holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those they serve. Whether it’s a word of encouragement, a prayer, or simply being present, the chaplains seek to be Jesus’s hands and feet in times of crisis or difficulty. By doing so, they bring hope, comfort, and peace to those who are struggling, and help them navigate life’s challenges with greater ease and confidence.

The impact of the chaplains’ work was eloquently testified by Chris Morgan, a retired nurse and member of Servant’s Church. Chris shared how her husband had found great comfort in the visits from the chaplains during his hospitalization, and how she herself had benefited from attending the Snack ‘n’ Chat events. These monthly gatherings, which feature a short presentation and a light lunch, provide a welcoming space for people to come together, build relationships, and learn from one another. The events are free and open to all, with the aim of fostering fellowship, encouragement, and growth in the Christian community. As Chris noted, “I enjoy going to Snack ‘n’ Chat very much. It is a friendly group, and we have some very interesting talks and lunch.”

The Snack ‘n’ Chat series has hosted a diverse range of speakers, including representatives from Friends International, Green Pastures Christian Bookshop, and Operation Christmas Child. The events have also featured members of the congregation sharing about their home countries or missionary work. Upcoming talks include “The Gospel to Gen Z” by Youth Worker Christian Brown, which will explore how God is moving among young people in 2025, and “Evangelism in Asia” by Katie from Christianity Explored Ministries, who will share about her work in evangelism. These events offer a unique opportunity for people to engage with topics of interest, learn from others, and grow in their faith. As the series continues to grow and evolve, it is clear that Snack ‘n’ Chat has become an integral part of the church’s outreach and community-building efforts.

The work of the NNUHFT Spiritual Healthcare team and the Snack ‘n’ Chat series highlights the importance of providing holistic care and support to individuals in need. By recognizing the interconnectedness of physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, we can better serve those around us and create a more compassionate and caring community. As Rev Adrian Woodbridge and his team so aptly demonstrate, even the simplest acts of kindness and compassion can have a profound impact on people’s lives. By being present, listening, and offering support, we can be the hands and feet of Jesus, bringing hope and healing to those who need it most.

As the Snack ‘n’ Chat series takes a break in August and resumes in September, the church invites everyone to join in and be a part of this vibrant and supportive community.
