New images of plans to redevelop city centre

Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn, is embarking on a large redevelopment project in Norwich that will transform the city’s main gateway. The existing Hotel Nelson, located opposite the train station, is set to be demolished and rebuilt, along with the addition of dozens of new homes and student accommodations. The company is planning to submit a formal planning application in the coming weeks to Norwich City Council for consideration early next year. The proposed redevelopment is expected to provide housing for about 600 people and will include a new 243-room hotel, commercial spaces for restaurants and cafes, two blocks of student flats totaling 491 rooms, a block of 75 residential apartments, and a large plaza on the riverfront for events.

The redevelopment project aims to completely revitalize the area near the train station, which is currently characterized by “tired and dilapidated” buildings. Whitbread hopes to create a vibrant and modern space that will benefit both residents and visitors to the city. The plans were unveiled at a City Hall briefing, showcasing the potential of the site to become a hub for housing, commercial activities, and community events. With a focus on providing a mix of accommodation options, including student flats, residential apartments, and a hotel, the project aims to cater to a diverse range of needs and preferences.

One of the key features of the redevelopment scheme is the inclusion of a large plaza on the riverfront, designed to serve as a gathering space for markets, concerts, and other events. This public area will enhance the social and cultural life of the city by providing a venue for community activities and entertainment. In addition to the residential and commercial aspects of the project, the plaza will contribute to the overall appeal of the site and create a welcoming atmosphere for both residents and visitors.

In addition to the housing and commercial spaces, the redeveloped site will also likely feature restaurants and cafes, adding to the vibrancy and vitality of the area. By incorporating amenities that cater to the needs of residents and visitors alike, Whitbread aims to create a dynamic and multifunctional destination in the heart of Norwich. The company’s vision for the project emphasizes quality of design, sustainability, and community engagement, with the goal of delivering a redevelopment that will be a lasting and valuable asset to the city of Norwich.
