Funding enables Norwich foodbank to buy supplies

Norwich foodbank was presented with a £1000 cheque from the GMB union whose representatives visited the charity’s warehouse at Ivy Road in Norwich.

Janice Smith, East Dereham GMB Branch Secretary and London Region GMB Retired Members Association Secretary, took the opportunity to have a look round the warehouse and understand the process of food being donated, weighed in, packed into food parcels and distributed across 11 centres including Wymondham, Wroxham and Earlham by teams of volunteers. Janice said, ‘It was a great pleasure to present the cheque to this worthy course during these hard times especially the elderly, single parents and the homeless giving them day to day necessities.’

Norwich foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust UK network, providing emergency food parcels to local people in crisis who have been referred by an agency or professional helping with the underlying cause of crisis. Norwich foodbank employs advice workers through Citizen’s Advice and Shelter to further help those who visit the foodbank as the foodbank’s vision is to see an end to the need for their service.

A spokesperson from the GMB said, “During the pandemic and now facing inflated household bills, we know that more people are being hit hard. We appreciate the work of the foodbank network, especially helping those on a very low income in providing food and everyday essentials.”

Hannah Worsley from Norwich foodbank said, ‘We are very grateful for this practical support of a financial gift, as we are seeing a significant increase in demand and buying in food items regularly in order to continue to provide nutritionally balanced food parcels to those in our community who need our help. We have a wonderful base of support within Norwich and to have this support from further afield is really encouraging.’
