Drayton and Taverham become mindful villages

Introducing the role of well-being champions in improving mental health in local communities
In many local areas, efforts to address mental health challenges have gained traction. Drayton and Taverham, for instance, have partnered with organizations like the Bob Carter Centre, representing families, young people, and young people’s services with the Charge of Taverham Day Centre, GP surgery staff, and the chair of the Drayton Parish Council. These initiatives aim to create safe and supportive environments for residents.

The council, Natasha Harpley, Expresses Foundational belief in the importance of mental health training programs. She has called for support from well-being champions to bridge the gap between mental health awareness and immediate support. These champions, recognized for their commitment to their communities, play a crucial role in empowering residents to address their mental health issues.

The initiative, Mindful Towns, is rooted in a national mental health program called Wellbeing Towns, which trains individuals in self-care, healthy relationships, and leadership. In Drayton, members of the Mindful Town training team guide visitors through community events and youth workshops, while in Taverham, they foster a sense of connection among residents. These programs are designed to reduce stigma and address mental health through practical, meaningful services.

Funded by the South Norfolk and Broadland Health and Wellbeing Partnership and supported by the NHS Norfolk, the initiative’s training has reached over 18,000 residents and visitors since its launch. The Help Hub team ensures ongoing support, combining expert advice with community engagement to maintain the effectiveness of these initiatives.
